Friendship and “Nirvana”. An examination of the intellectual and emotional relationship between Rohde and Nietzsche

Abstract

Through a detailed examination of the correspondence between Erwin Rohde and Friedrich Nietzsche, and its comparison with the approach they took to certain themes in their works, which to some extent concern the bond they maintained - love, philology, immortality, the Dionysian and, above all, friendship - we will attempt to reveal, on the one hand, the nature of this bond, generally underestimated and overshadowed by the insistence on the analysis of other encounters in Nietzsche's life, such as those with Wagner and Andreas-Salomé, and, on the other, the mutual intellectual influence between one of the most prominent philologists of the 19th century and one of the most important figures in the history of philosophy.
