Abstract

In Meditaciones del Quijote (1914) e Ideas sobre la novela (1925) the Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955) passes from the fields of philosophy to literary theory, even going to the technique of the novel. This perspective can be useful for a broader dialogue between the fields of philosophy and creative writing. The article sets out possible elements for an "art of the novel" from these works of Ortega y Gasset based on their approaches. The Spanish author considered that the novel has evolved with the work of Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616), becoming a "slow gender", of atmosphere, unlike traditional narrative, the epic and adventure novels focused on action more than in "imaginary psychology" of the characters. The philosopher criticizes what he considers to be the addiction of these ancient narratives in the "drug of imagination" as escape of reality elements. It establishes the relationship between reality and the real world of modern realism as a turning point in the evolution of the novel. The article discusses some of orteguians contributions, concluding with what could be a critical line to some of the most used manuals of script and current creative writing, generators of the same elements that have been combated by the philosopher
