Abstract

Some of the central cognitions written by Foucault for us to think about updating the present have regarded about experience and displacement. Taking updating of suicide theme as the guiding thread, this text aims at thinking with Foucault, based on the studies he carried out on Antiquity, especially on Seneca, concerning the displacement of the binary value of saving life in face of death, for a self-practice as a process, in self-care, as cynical parrhesia, that is, suicide in its scandalous truth. Observed by Foucault, such displacement emerges, for example, in Seneca’s point of view, when he considers cowardice to passively wait for death, without knowing which one lasts, whether life or death. In ancient times, Cynics were an expression of parrhesia and confronted people with their values. And they revealed what blindness of subordination does not allow them to see.
