Fernando Sánchez-Ávila Estébanez es Licenciado en Filosofía y Máster en Philosophie et critiques contemporaines de la culture por la universidad de Vincennes–Saint-Denis (Paris 8). Actualmente vinculado a la Universidad de Castilla la Mancha, desarrolla su tesis doctoral en torno al rol que jugó la producción filosófica y literaria relativa a las luchas homosexuales de la Francia de los años setenta en la conformación de la cultura mainstream contemporánea y de los desafíos específicos del activismo y la crítica queer del siglo XXI.
David Halperin argued that for Michel Foucault the gay way of life, paradigmatically represented by the S&M subculture of San Francisco, was ‘structurally isomorphic’ to the techné tou biou of Ancient Greece. Following up on this idea, on the basis of Foucault’s interviews with the nonacademic gay press and the ‘ontologizing’ dimension of his interpretation about ‘style of life’ (style de vie) in the 1980-1981 lectures at the Collège de France, we explore the ways in which a thoroughly anti-essentialist conception of Greek subjectivity and a désassujetissant understanding of pleasure are key to acknowledge a ‘homosexual ascetics’ as a new form of an aesthetics of existence (esthétique de l’existence).
