This article is about the way in which Henry David Thoreau conceives Philosophy, i.e. not as a merely theoretical issue but as a practical and existential affair, bound to a way of living. However, in contrast with Pierre Hadot's interpretation of Walden, I do not understand this as a reminiscence of the ancient's conception of philosophy. On the contrary, I present it as an inscription in an unequivocally modern tradition, that which conceives life as an experiment and the philosopher as an experimenter. This reading of Thoreau's work in experimental terms opens up philosophy to new possibilities, by placing it beyond its representational character and the search for truth. At the same time, it allows us to qualify the negative image of Thoreau that has been predominant since the author's time, that of an inflexible moralist often disdainful of others people's lives
